Logic, not emotion, will prevail in this post.
What happened:
- A 67 year old man who is a well-known as a medical doctor (but not actually a medical doctor) with a history of diabetes embarks on a journey on foot.
- In the face of The Hellenic National Meteorological Service extreme heat alert, with temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) the man took a route that involved steep inclines, rocky paths, and potential hazards like venomous snakes and loose rocks.
- He was known to be carrying only an umbrella for shade and a limited water supply (a single bottle, according to his wife) – insufficient for a long walk in such conditions.
- He was not carrying a mobile phone which meant that he had no way to call for help if he encountered difficulties or became lost.
Dr Mosely was found dead after a major search for him on the Greek island of Symi. He is mourned by his wife and children.
Inferences
You do not need to be a doctor to know the following:
- Age plus vulnerability arising from a medical condition such as diabetes, in extreme heat present obvious risks
- Obviously navigating such treacherous terrain in extreme heat adds to physical strain and risk of injury.
- Engaging in strenuous physical activity under such conditions poses a significant risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, or heat stroke.
- Not carriing a communication device in the above is not a good idea.
Conclusion
The intelligent and educated are not immune to stupidity. Stupidity can kill anyone.
