Rock solid proof that stupidity kills

Logic, not emotion, will prevail in this post.

What happened:

  1. A 67 year old man who is a well-known as a medical doctor (but not actually a medical doctor) with a history of diabetes embarks on a journey on foot.
  2. In the face of The Hellenic National Meteorological Service extreme heat alert, with temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) the man took a route that involved steep inclines, rocky paths, and potential hazards like venomous snakes and loose rocks.
  3. He was known to be carrying only an umbrella for shade and a limited water supply (a single bottle, according to his wife) – insufficient for a long walk in such conditions.
  4. He was not carrying a mobile phone which meant that he had no way to call for help if he encountered difficulties or became lost.

Dr Mosely was found dead after a major search for him on the Greek island of Symi. He is mourned by his wife and children.

Inferences

You do not need to be a doctor to know the following:

  1. Age plus vulnerability arising from a medical condition such as diabetes, in extreme heat present obvious risks
  2. Obviously navigating such treacherous terrain in extreme heat adds to physical strain and risk of injury.
  3. Engaging in strenuous physical activity under such conditions poses a significant risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, or heat stroke.
  4. Not carriing a communication device in the above is not a good idea.

Conclusion

The intelligent and educated are not immune to stupidity. Stupidity can kill anyone.
