For many years I’ve kept Captain’s Watch mostly away from Google. That was because the site/blog was originally set up as a sort of diary shared only with close associates (I don’t have or keep friends). But over the last few months I’ve been reflecting much on how the site has changed in its form an content.

Further, as I grow older – I came to a realisation that I ought not to be hiding the content from Google – and the world. So I bit the bullet and changed site features to expose articles on the blog to Google. In the early days I had a ‘hit counter’. That was meaningless because few people would visit the site. But now that the site is exposed to Google, it is important to get their analytics to see what sort of topics are picked up and are of interest.

I’m a bit worried of course that any increased exposure to the public may invite ‘jihad’ upon me. Well, I’ll have to wait and see.

The site is also to be exposed to Google AdSense. I am not sure what that means exactly. I don’t know if Google is somehow gonna post ads on the site. I’d prefer if that happened in the background via their search engines. Again this is going to be a discovery, what happens next.

Ultimately, I am no not interested in monetising the site for my financial gain. If I get a few pennies that’s fine – but I don’t need the money. Perhaps Google may make some money – and that’s my thanks to them for providing services for next to nothing.
