Bypassing Throttling: When You Have a Need for Speed!!

For those who rely on a mobile hotspot as their primary internet connection in the UK—particularly on the Three network—it is common to hit a performance ceiling. Despite having hardware as capable as the Samsung S24 Ultra, standard settings often result in “traffic shaping” or stability issues due to Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT).

Recent testing has revealed a significant performance “sweet spot” achieved by combining a specific Access Point Name (APN) change with NordVPN’s NordLynx protocol. This setup recently delivered a jump from 370 Mbps to a sustained 480 Mbps, with burst speeds momentarily touching 1.5 Gbps.

The Problem with Default Settings

Most mobile devices default to the three.co.uk APN. This gateway is designed for standard smartphone use. It places the user behind CGNAT, meaning you share a public IP with thousands of others. For a hotspot user, this creates “double NAT” friction, leading to short IP lease times and aggressive traffic management by the ISP.

The Solution: The 3internet Gateway

By switching to the 3internet APN, you move from a managed mobile gateway to a “Broadband” gateway. This provides a cleaner, more direct data path that is less prone to the periodic refreshes that plague standard mobile connections.

The NordLynx Synergy

The real magic happens when you layer NordVPN’s NordLynx (WireGuard-based) protocol on top of this new APN. By using NordLynx with Post-Quantum Encryption enabled, your data is so thoroughly encrypted that the ISP’s Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) cannot identify the type of traffic (e.g., video streaming or large downloads).

This effectively “blinds” the network’s throttling mechanisms, allowing for raw, unhindered speeds. The impact is immediately noticeable; in recent tests, response times for data-heavy tasks—including complex AI interactions and Canvas rendering—effectively doubled in speed once the tunnel was active.

Furthermore, general web browsing feels significantly “snappier.” Websites that usually stutter during load are now snapping into view almost instantly. This is likely due to the setup allowing for massive “burst” speeds (reaching up to 1.5 Gbps). When a browser first opens a page and requests dozens of small files at once, the 3internet gateway allows these spikes to go through unhindered, whereas a standard mobile APN would typically flag and slow down such sudden surges.

Configuration Guide for Samsung S24 Ultra (Android 14/15)

To replicate these results, you must create a manual APN profile. On a Samsung S24 Ultra, navigate to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names and tap Add.

Enter the following settings exactly:

FieldSetting
NameThree Internet
APN3internet
MMSChttp://mms.um.three.co.uk:10021/mmsc
MMS Proxymms.three.co.uk
MMS Port8799
MCC234
MNC20
APN Typedefault,supl,mms
APN ProtocolIPv4/IPv6
APN Roaming ProtocolIPv4/IPv6

Leave all other fields as ‘Not set’ or blank.

Activation Steps

  1. Save and Select: Tap the three dots in the top right, hit Save, and then select the new Three Internet profile.
  2. Refresh: Toggle Airplane Mode on and off.
  3. VPN Setup: Open the NordVPN desktop app, ensure the protocol is set to NordLynx, and enable Post-Quantum Encryption.
  4. Connect: Use “Quick Connect” to find a local UK server.

Conclusion

By removing the NAT overhead via the APN change and bypassing ISP traffic shaping with NordLynx, mobile hotspot users can unlock the true potential of their 5G/6G hardware. This setup doesn’t just improve security; it provides a measurable, significant boost to raw throughput, page-load snappiness, and connection stability.

Jargon Buster: Glossary of Terms

  • APN (Access Point Name): Think of this as the “doorway” your phone uses to get onto the internet. Different doorways have different rules; one might be for basic phone data, while another (like 3internet) is designed for heavy-duty broadband use.
  • NAT (Network Address Translation): A system that lets multiple devices share one internet connection. “Carrier-Grade NAT” (CGNAT) is a larger version where the mobile network puts thousands of people in one group, which can slow things down and cause connection drops.
  • Throttling / Traffic Shaping: When an internet provider intentionally slows down your connection because they think you are doing something intensive, like watching 4K video or downloading huge files.
  • DPI (Deep Packet Inspection): A method used by providers to “peek” at your data to see what you are doing (like streaming vs. emailing) so they can decide whether to slow you down.
  • NordLynx / WireGuard: The technology that runs the VPN. It is designed to be much faster and more reliable than older systems, especially on mobile connections.
  • Post-Quantum Encryption: Super-advanced security designed to protect your data not just from today’s computers, but from the incredibly powerful “Quantum” computers of the future.
  • Handshake: The split-second digital “introduction” that happens when your VPN connects to a server.
  • Latency (Ping): The time it takes for a signal to go from your device to the internet and back. Lower is better, especially for gaming or video calls.
