I’ve been searching for the last 5 years for an economical very small microwave oven. This is something I could use when working out of hotels. Well, I gave up on the search. But not easily. I even explored trying to build with my own hands, a small microwave by taking component parts from second hand microwave ovens. After some deep research into costs and materials etc it was too much time and effort. Cost of the build was not prohibitive, coming in at under £200.

The Exploration
There was one battery operated ultra-small microwave on the market that costed around £700. That was just ridiculous. Caution: this is not a request for ‘advice’ (FFS! 😠).
Basically I was fighting a market – or lack of it. But now, technology has moved according to market demands. So, the age of air fryers is here! I bought one in April 2024 and had a lot of experience using it. It does not create smoke unless ‘you’ (meaning me) do some crazy roasting in it. That was a key issue, if I had to use and airfryer at a hotel i.e. you (meaning me) can’t be setting off fire alarms – and I’m not explaining that further. I also needed my Bluetti power bank to be able to power the airfryer in case I had to move to the boot of my car to heat up me breakfast or dinner. Yes – that’s the power bank lives in the boot of my car. Trust me – you don’t need a dissertation on why that’s so.

So now I’m settling into considering a very small airfryer for when I’m on my travels. I’ve come down to the Salter EK2817 2L Compact Air Fryer after much exploration. That’s coming in at approximately £40. It would be much lighter (in weight) than a microwave.
I mean, all I need is to do some cheese or egg on toast on mornings – nothing fancy. Or beans on toast would be nice for breakfast. No, I would not be putting beans on a slice of bread in there! What – somebody thinks I’m stupid? 🙄
As always, I’m not in a rush. I check out options for months in advance – at intervals – before making decisions on appliance purchases. Like – I purchased the only (at the time) 14L washing machine with a 5-year warranty for under £650, after much research – and I’m quite satisfied with it. No, I don’t do ‘happy’.
BTW the airfryer from 2024 began to malfunction. Amazon agreed after some ‘teeth pulling’ to refund. But that’s another story coming up soon.
Conclusion
So ‘we shall see’- as the mysterious ‘they’ would say. I’m still exploring. No rush to part with my money.
That’s it. Now bugger off!
